MobiMedia is founded as a mobile media and marketing agency

MobiMedia establishes technology hub, launches various FIFA 2010 portals

Digital video production capabilities- are expanded within HoneyKome

OMG technology hub is established to serve internal and external requirements; HoneyKome adds SEO and video animation divisions; TEAMtalk media opens offices in Leeds and Australia; AddSuite expands Google collaboration in Africa; MobiMedia pioneers “three-C”, new USSD ad serving technology.

In 2009, the seeds for what would later become the Ole! Media Group were sown over a couple of cups of coffee in a Johannesburg café. As MD of a mobile messaging company at the time, Tim Legg was well aware of the power of mobile as a mass communication medium. Seeing the huge potential of this as a marketing tool, he and partner, Desere’ Orrill, set up MobiMedia, a strategic marketing agency that utilises the mobile channel to engage with consumers. Within a year, the company’s client base had grown to include major retailers and brands, cellular networks, media houses as well as various digital-only publishers.

In taking on the task of developing a range of mobile portals for Cape Town-based digital sports publisher, TEAMtalk media (a division of BSkyB at the time), a strategic relationship between the two companies was born, which would later help shape the group as a whole. When in 2011 the local team led a management buyout of TEAMtalk media to form an independent sports news agency, Legg was appointed as managing director of the newly formed entity, while Orrill focused on the MobiMedia business.

Expanding TEAMtalk’s remit to include not only digital publishing but also content syndication and data distribution services, the client base grew from one account, BSkyB, to fourteen within as many months. In acquiring PA Sport South Africa Pty Ltd, the company became the official data partner of the SA Premier Soccer League (PSL) as well as the exclusive distributor of English Premier League (EPL) data in SA. Meanwhile, at MobiMedia, the team sought to broaden the company’s client base and service offering, with a focus on increasing not only revenue but also profitability.

The successful growth of both businesses led to Legg and Orrill acquiring TEAMtalk media in 2013 and establishing a Johannesburg and Cape Town presence for both companies. As a priority, they turned their attention to instituting a new business ethos focusing on what they consider to be the companies’ best assets – human capital, client and partner relationships, and intellectual property (IP). With the invaluable support of key members of the team, both companies focused on reinforcing their customer-centric approach.

In early 2013, the Ole! Media Group was established as a holding company for the businesses and to serve as the umbrella entity for future growth within the organisation. Identifying the burgeoning of business opportunities in the digital realm, the objective was to build a solid framework upon which various symbiotic and complementary companies could be built, and create an environment within which entrepreneurial individuals would thrive.

March 2013 saw the formation of the third enterprise within the group, digital advertising services company, AddSuite. The company provides ad serving technology, as well as real-time-bidding and programmatic trading of digital ad inventory, helping to maximise publishers’ revenues and assisting advertisers to achieve higher returns on their digital media spend. In December 2013, the Ole! Media Group acquired Johannesburg-based digital sports agency Full Circle Sports Online, integrating this into the TEAMtalk media brand. 2013 also saw the beta launch of the TEAMtalk media Online Sports Journalism Academy, in collaboration with the Western Cape Government.

As the group’s mobile and online content, publishing and advertising offering continued to grow, full-service digital agency – HoneyKome – was formed in May 2014. The agency provides the digital link between all the group companies and assists in implementing 360 degree digital marketing and communication solutions. Adding video content to the digital mix, in-house video production capabilities were expanded a few months later. The production team in Cape Town now includes animation experts, and a studio and production team in Johannesburg has been established.

The group’s philosophy is one of effective engagement, with each division taking a hands-on approach to finding solutions that meet and exceed clients’ requirements. Individually, each company offers in-depth knowledge of specific areas within the digisphere and is able to provide expert advice and customised solutions. As a group, the organisation offers a comprehensive portfolio of digital media services across a wide range of disciplines, and is able to deliver on all of them – from concept to completion.

The organisation has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. Fuelled by the entrepreneurial spirit, a judicious mix of innovation and determination, plus a dash of good luck – the route ahead for the Ole! Media Group promises to be an interesting one. 2015 has seen us expand our digital, creative and technological capabilities, plus add to our global footprint with new teams in Leeds, Australia and NZ.
